About this event

Co-hosted by United States Artists (USA) and Mutual Mentorship for Musicians (M³), the afternoon will feature readings from M³’s Anthology of Writings by artists Jessica Jones, Gwen Laster, Naomi Nakanishi, and Dafna Naphtali.

The event also celebrates the launch of Issue 9 of New Suns, USA’s online publication containing commissions, experiences, and stories from artists responding to life and the world around them. In collaboration with M³, USA produced New Suns’ 9th issue: Found in Translation, featuring a series of conversations between M³ musicians focusing on how artists encounter or use translation in their creative practices and daily life.

New Suns: Listening with Artists is an online publication of commissions, experiences, and stories from artists responding to life and the world around them. Each issue centers the curious-minded ways artists challenge and reconfigure established frameworks through play, conversation, reflection, and speculation. New Suns encourages learning from and listening with the individuals behind the art.

M³’s Anthology of Writings is an annual publication that intends to shift authorship and power to women, non-binary musicians, and artists of other underrepresented gender identities by allowing them to take control of their own narratives. M³ has published four Anthologies of Writings online and two physical books of Volumes 1 & 2 and Volumes 3 & 4, featuring essays and poems by M³’s first four cohorts. The series represents an urgent archive of writings on the creative work, struggles, and hopes of underrepresented musicians, preserving their legacy for future generations, and decentering white patriarchy in music.

United States Artists (USA) is a national funding organization dedicated to supporting artists through programs and initiatives that include unrestricted awards, tailored services, publications, commissions, and convenings.

M³ (Mutual Mentorship for Musicians) is a platform created to empower, elevate, normalize and give visibility to musicians of historically underrepresented gender identities (including cis women, trans women, trans men, and non-binary people) in intersection with race, sexuality, or ability across generations in the US and worldwide, through a radical model of mentorship and musical collaborative musical commissions.
